A New Approach to Building Materials in Luxury Construction

The luxury construction industry, particularly in the ultra-luxury sector, is ripe for disruption. As the CEO and Co-Founder of Stately Doors & Windows, I’ve witnessed firsthand how inefficiencies and compromises hinder high-end construction projects. Currently, the system relies on a fragmented supply chain and mass-produced products, which struggle to meet the unique demands of luxury design.

To move forward, we need a new approach—one that prioritizes customization, fosters collaboration, and ensures seamless execution. Only then can we raise the bar for ultra-luxury homebuilding.

In a typical ultra-luxury home build, architects and builders often juggle seven to ten vendors just for doors and windows. One might specialize in steel doors, another in wood, and others in sliding glass systems. This fragmented structure introduces a range of issues that impact both the design and execution of the project.:

  • Aesthetic Compromises: Architects design with a specific vision in mind. However, as builders attempt to match that vision using off-the-shelf products, the original intent often gets diluted. Slight mismatches, like different shades of black or inconsistent mullion profiles, accumulate. In the end, the final result may fall short of the design’s full potential.
  • Operational Inefficiencies: Builders must coordinate with multiple vendors, each with its own warranty terms, timelines, and installation methods. When something goes wrong, confusion sets in. Is it a manufacturing defect or an installation issue? Finger-pointing begins, and the builder is left to manage the fallout.
  • Costly Adjustments: For instance, on a $30 million project in California, a builder had to lower the ceiling heights to accommodate the standard dimensions of a competitor’s sliding door system. These compromises happen when mass production takes precedence over precision and customization.

The Solution in Contruction: A Single-Source Approach

At Stately, we’ve reimagined the process from the ground up. Instead of making architects and builders piece together products from multiple vendors, we collaborate directly with them. Together, we design and manufacture doors, windows, and millwork that align with the original vision. Here’s how we do it:

  1. Design-Centric Approach: We don’t start with off-the-shelf products. We start with the architect’s design and build what’s needed to bring that vision to life. This ensures the final result matches exactly what the homeowner and architect imagined.
  2. End-to-End Service: We manage every stage — design, manufacturing, delivery, installation, and post-sale support. This removes the need for multiple vendors and creates clear accountability from start to finish.
  3. Customization at Scale: Unlike large manufacturers focused on efficiency, we’re built to serve luxury projects with custom needs. Whether it’s a precise shade of black or a door system tailored to ceiling heights, we deliver solutions designed for each unique space.

Why the Luxury Construction Industry Needs to Change

The current supply chain, manufacturer to distributor to wholesaler to reseller, was built for mass production, not luxury. It commoditizes products, forcing them into standardized sizes and configurations that meet the needs of the masses. While that works for 95% of homes, it fails in ultra-luxury projects where every detail matters.

Luxury isn’t about fitting into a box. It’s about creating something extraordinary. That’s why we’ve built a supply chain with a single point of contact: Stately. By removing the middlemen, we stay focused on what matters — the final result.

Common Misconceptions About Luxury Materials

  1. Luxury Materials Are Made in Europe: Many people assume the best wood and steel windows and doors must come from high-end European companies. But that’s not true. High-quality materials are readily available here in the United States. At Stately, along with our subsidiary Reilly Architectural, we manufacture top-tier wood doors and windows in facilities across the country. While we use our premium Swiss steel for our metal products, we can manufacture in various locations, including the U.S., depending on each client’s needs.
  2. Big Brands Can Customize for Luxury: Drive through any new construction neighborhood, and you’ll see the same four or five brand stickers on nearly every window and door. These builder-grade mega-manufacturers may offer “configurable” products, but they’re not built for true customization. Their massive scale depends on efficiency, which often comes at the cost of craftsmanship and tailored solutions.

The Future of Luxury Construction

The building materials industry stands at a crossroads. For too long, it has relied on an outdated model that values efficiency over excellence. But in the ultra-luxury construction, excellence isn’t optional — it’s essential.

At Stately, we’re redefining what’s possible. We focus on collaboration, customization, and flawless execution. That’s how we help architects, builders, and homeowners bring their visions to life without compromise.

The future of luxury construction doesn’t lie in adapting to a broken system. It lies in building a better one. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
